NIPNLG Proudly Announces its 2020 Member Honoree Linus Chan

"No One Should be Caged for Being Poor"

linus chan

Linus Chan is an immigration attorney and advocate who has spent years defending detained immigrants in removal proceedings. Most recently, he was instrumental to the inclusion of immigration in the Minnesota Freedom Fund, a criminal bail and immigration bond fund. MFF believes in a society that does not condition pretrial freedom on class or identity, that has ended mass incarceration, and that invests in restorative and transformative justice. Linus’s involvement with MFF was driven by deep frustration with a legal system that harms his clients and communities. In 2017, Linus also successfully represented one of the MN8 (eight Cambodian American men from Minnesota who were detained by ICE), staving off the government’s attempt to deport his client. Linus Chan is an associate professor of clinical law and director of the Detainee Rights Clinic at the University of Minnesota Law School’s James H. Binger Center for New Americans. He also teaches in the area at the intersection of criminal and immigration law.
